![]() If you have a collection that you do not want to sell, but do want an appraisal, please email me. The fees vary on this service depending upon the size of the collection, travel time and documentation required. I would prefer seeing artifacts in person, but realize this is not always possible. I have placed an example below of how I appraise using digital photos. |

Grading Scale:
I have been trying to come up with a grading scale for arrowheads. Here is my attempt at a system: All categories are graded on a 1-10 scale unless bonus points are noted. To get the grade of an artifact, you add up the total points and divide by the number of categories.
1) Condition- First nick that reduces form or symmetry is minus 1. I will not remove a point for a modern nick that does not detract from the piece other than to show patination change. This category is most important and the number awarded will be counted twice. For example, a 7 in this category is worth 14 out of 20.
2) Workmanship- Quality of workmanship is graded within the general type of arrowhead. For example, Adena workmanship is only compared to other Adena's, not Clovi workmanship. Bonus traits include serrations, parallel flaking, thinness.
3) Material - Higher grade material and color are given the top grades. Outstanding material can be given bonus points.
Bonus Traits:
1) Size - I don't want to subtract for small points, but I will add for large examples within a type
2) Typology - Desirable and rare types can add points to a piece, but there is no subtracting for less desirable types.
3) Rare Features- Any feature that sets a piece apart from other pieces within its type.
